Beijing Union University is a regular comprehensive higher education institution at municipal administrative level, established in 1985 with approval of China’s Ministry of Education. It was originally from college branches of Peking University, Tsinghua University and other universities in Beijing, which came into being in 1978. As a result of China’s reform and opening up to the outside world, in keeping with the economic construction of the capital and meeting the demands of the development of society, BUU has become a key multi-disciplinary university in Beijing, which trains application-oriented personnel mainly through regular undergraduate courses. It has formed the theme of “people-oriented, application-rooted”. Its guideline in running school is “to develop application oriented education, nurture application oriented personnel and construct application oriented university”, and its orientation is “ opening to the mass, contributing to the capital, basing on application and striving for the best”. BUU covers a constructed area of 600,000 square meters. Its libraries own a collection of 2,086,000 volumes of books. BUU owns 8 college level experimental/training bases and modern multi-media classrooms. The advanced campus web is located on the main campus, radiating to 12 university zones covering 16 colleges. There are altogether 9000 portals within the campus web. At present it has a student enrolment of more than 29，000, of whom are 19，000 undergraduates, about 10，000 higher vocational students，and 109 postgraduates trained with other key universities.90% percent of the graduates have found their positions in Beijing.     On the setting of specialties, BUU stresses the need for Beijing economic construction and social development by offering 54 undergraduate majors and 72 specialties of higher vocational education covering 8 fields including economics, laws, education, literature, history, science, engineering, and management. It has three Key Construction Subjects of municipal level, Economic Law, Computer Application Technology, Food Science; twelve Key Construction Subjects of college level, such as Specialized history, Special education, Travel &Tourism Management, Human Geography and so on. From 2006, BUU has been authorized to award Master Degree (Special History, Computer Application Technology and Food Science) by Master Degrees Committee of the State Council. It will recruit postgraduates from 2007.     It has a great number of teachers, including 1,688 full-time teachers, of whom are 107 professors, 491 associate professors, 129 doctors and 742 postgraduates. Up to 12 experts enjoy the government’s subsidies, and 12 teachers work as directors or vice directors at Teaching Steering Committee of Ministry of Education. BUU also has a large group of scholars and guest teachers well known both at home and abroad, such as Tan Haoqiang (expert on computer), Liu Longheng (expert on Economic Law, Tax Law and Bank Law), Jin Zonglian (expert on Functional Foods) and Xu Bodong (expert on Taiwan Issue).     BUU regards teaching practice as center task of all school activities all along. We believe teaching quality is the lifeline of the school, so we integrated teaching resources to form an excellent atmosphere where the school leaders attach importance to teaching, all the regulations ensure teaching practice, the outlay supports teaching, researches promote teaching, and the whole school serves for teaching. We work hard to develop practical education. We won quite a few teaching results awards in Beijing and China. In the year 2004, three teaching results won the first prize, seven results won the second prize in the Beijing Higher Education Teaching Results Competition. And there were 15 teaching materials being evaluated as the best Beijing HigherEducation Teaching Materials. In the year 2005, one teaching result won the second prize, in the National Teaching Results Competition. One course was evaluated as one of the best National Course, and two courses were evaluated as the best courses in Beijing. In 2006, there are three courses being evaluated as the best courses in Beijing.     BUU emphasizes on science and technology. The research activities and academic exchanges are getting actively day by day. At present, we have one national testing institution (healthy foods’ function testing center), three Municipal-level Research Institutes (Beijing Key Lab of Biologically Active Substance & Functional Food, Key Research Institute of Beijing Study and Beijing Political Civilization Construction Research Center), and twenty-one College-level Research Institutes, including Institute of Taiwan Study, Institute of People’s Congress System, Institute of Practical Higher Education, and so on. Beijing Union University has got the amount of research outlay stands in the forefront of Beijing Municipal universities. We won 15 science research awards, 18 teaching results awards. The teaching staffs have published 3000 academic papers home and abroad, and over 30 papers have been embodied as those written as the first writer by SCI, EI and ISPT. Our university has accomplished the research and developing of information systems of the 11th Asian Games and the 21st International College Students Sports Meet.     Today, BUU has established friendship relations with more than 30 universities and colleges from over a dozen countries and regions, including U.S.A, England, France, German, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Japan, Holland and so on. Each year it sends teachers abroad for training or participating academic exchanges activities. Students exchange program expands continuously via many channels by which outstanding college students are selected to study overseas.
